“Saraswati,” 2017 (Soft pastels and graphite on Arches paper)
Original work by Shreya Mehta
24in x 30in (61cm x 76cm), unframed
Artist's Note: Saraswati is the Goddess of learning, knowledge, and wisdom. The Sanskrit word sara means "essence" and swa means "self." Thus Saraswati means "the essence of the self." Goddess Saraswati is worshipped by all persons interested in knowledge, especially students, teachers, scholars, and scientists. In this image, there is a layering of images, one for the goddess and one for the mortal lady. The message being that within every woman is a goddess. The closer you get to the image, the more intricate details you can see, the further you get, the more of the mortal face you can see. Similar to reality, the more you know a person, the more of the inner being you can see, and from a distance, you can only see a person’s face.
